Data hoarding: Does the term apply to your donor data?

Data hoarding: Does the term apply to your donor data?

Have you watched the A&E television show Hoarders? The clutter and garbage in some of the homes on that show are unmanageable. It makes you want to shout at the tv: “Throw that trash away!” Now, let’s talk about your donor database. When was the last time you cleaned it up? Got rid of dupes? Threw the trash out? Perhaps this story is familiar. Year after year you gather information about donors. Donors lapse. Some move away. Others pass away. You keep mailing out newsletters and fundraising appeals. Your response […]

More fundraising software = more data headaches

More fundraising software = more data headaches

Technology both simplifies and complicates our lives. Nowhere is this more true than in the nonprofit sector. Let’s face it … there is a direct relationship between the number of fundraising software systems we are using and the data problems we are creating for ourselves. More fundraising software = more data headaches. The solution = taking control of your data. What sort of fundraising software are we talking about? There’s a lot. Start with contact databases, donor management systems, and CRMs. Add to that volunteer management and event management. Next, email marketing […]

Attention nonprofits: We don’t know our donor data!

Attention nonprofits: We don’t know our donor data!

Understanding data is critically important to success in any business. Unfortunately, data can be boring, even confusing. Many nonprofits don’t know their donor data. While that’s understandable, it is also a big problem. If we don’t know our donor data, how can we effectively plan a fundraising appeal? Build a fundraising strategy? Combat the challenges of donor retention? The answers to those questions are simple: we can’t. So, how do we know that nonprofits don’t know their donor data? Data degrades, goes missing For starters, ALL data degrades over time. What’s […]

It’s time to rethink nonprofit data

It’s time to rethink nonprofit data

Data. It’s the four-letter word that seems to be on the lips of just about every executive in the nation. It is being called the ‘new oil’ of the 21st century, the fuel that will power our interconnected, information economy. Make no mistake – data is as important to nonprofit organizations as their for-profit cousins. The Chronicle of Philanthropy said as much in a recently published article about how nonprofits are beginning to user their data more effectively. Unfortunately, many if not most of today’s nonprofit organizations focus a disproportionate […]

Data brokers under fire: What does that mean for nonprofits?

Data brokers under fire: What does that mean for nonprofits?

The buying and selling of consumer data – data brokerage – is a multibillion-dollar industry that is getting a lot of attention on Capitol Hill.  Nonprofits need to pay attention to this issue because the quality of your data may be impacted. In October, Senator John D. Rockefeller IV, chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, expanded his committee’s investigation into the industry, an investigation that has been going on for more than a year.  So far, lots of questions are being asked in order to better […]

More or better: Which donor strategy is preferred?

More or better: Which donor strategy is preferred?

Looking at the charity sector at the macro level, statistics are reassuring.  Giving has been recovering since the financial crisis of 2008. This past summer, sources reported that year-over-year growth in charitable giving for 2012 continued at a steady pace of 3.5%.  The largest sectors receiving donations continue to be religious institutions (32%), education (13%) and social services (12%).  Online giving remains a relatively small part of the total at $316B, yet it also continues to outpace all giving (up anywhere from 11% to 17%, depending on the source and […]

Donor data hygiene: Can we keep it clean?

Donor data hygiene: Can we keep it clean?

In the opening interview scene of the Pixar movie The Incredibles, Mr. Incredible expresses the frustration of being a super hero.  “No matter how many times you save the world, it always manages to get in jeopardy again.  Sometimes I just want it to STAY SAVED, you know, for a little bit.  I feel like the maid … I just cleaned up this mess … can we keep it clean for TEN MINUTES?” With that closing rhetorical question, Mr. Incredible could have been talking about your donor data.  And in case you […]
