Fundraising without donor data: What’s that proverb about giving a man a fish?

Fundraising without donor data: What’s that proverb about giving a man a fish?

Most charities raise money from many different sources – direct mail appeals, online donations, events, workplace giving campaigns, and matching gift programs to name a few. How often do the funds come in without usable donor data – or any donor data – behind it? If your organization is fundraising without donor data to support it, then you have a problem that needs your attention. It is time to manage that problem and reduce risk. What’s that proverb? We have all heard the proverb: Give a man a fish, you feed him for […]

Fundraising data analytics – mining the gold in your own backyard

Fundraising data analytics – mining the gold in your own backyard

Fundraising data analytics is becoming more popular – and more necessary in today’s philanthropy marketplace. We hear about it, we read about it, we think about it more than ever. Nicole Wallace at The Chronicle of Philanthropy wrote a terrific piece this week, ‘Fundraisers Reap Millions by Using Data Gold Mine’. Fundraising data analytics is the equivalent of mining the gold in our own nonprofit backyards. Admittedly, for many of us in the sector, the very mention of ‘data analytics’ sounds intimidating. It’s a show-stopper. Well, our best advice is […]

How to forecast fundraising risk before your walkathon stalls

How to forecast fundraising risk before your walkathon stalls

Can the risk to your next fundraising effort be forecast in advance through some basic data algorithms? The answer is a resounding ‘yes,’ which should be good news to nonprofit organizations concerned about recent news articles portraying the declining fortunes in walkathons and other popular team-building events. Throughout the early 00’s these team-building events enjoyed enormous popularity with their nonprofit sponsors and the participants who joined them. Walkers, runners, bikers, climbers, and a host of other participant types leveraged Web tools to enjoin friends, family, colleagues and others to sponsor […]

The Ice Bucket Challenge Epilogue: Data

The Ice Bucket Challenge Epilogue: Data

The conversations about the ALS Association’s astounding success with the Ice Bucket Challenge continue. Blogs, newsletters, periodicals, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter … people are still talking about it. Let me offer one piece of advice: let’s not get distracted by the story and instead focus on the epilogue – the Ice Bucket Epilogue: it’s about the data. Discussion and debate Did you know that the Ice Bucket Challenge has its own Wikipedia article? Yep. Did you know that YouTube views of Ice Bucket Challenge events have surpassed 1 billion … that’s with a “b”? […]

Data drives better digital marketing for nonprofits

Data drives better digital marketing for nonprofits

Using data to drive your digital marketing campaigns is essential. Without the discipline of data, your digital marketing success is based more on hope than strategy and execution. Our corporate marketers understand the criticality of data all too well, especially retailers. While we use terms like “donor” and “constituent”, they are “consumers” too. We can learn a lot about reaching donors more effectively by keeping an eye on what our corporate retailing counter parts are doing to reach consumers. For example, Epsilon, a consumer brand loyalty expert, published a short report on […]

Data quality vs. data quantity: let’s end the debate!

Data quality vs. data quantity: let’s end the debate!

When it comes to nonprofit data, especially donor data, there’s a running debate. Which is more important, data quality or quantity? It’s a matter of preference, right? Like the old Miller Lite commercials, ‘Tastes Great vs. Less Filling‘. Your nonprofit organization needs to acquire new donors (data quantity), but you also need the ‘right’ data in order to foster better, longer term relationships (data quality). So both are equally important, right? Wrong. It is time to end the debate. Put quality first, especially donor data quality. Why quality first? We have […]

Navigating the fundraising paradigm shift with data

Navigating the fundraising paradigm shift with data

There’s a fundraising paradigm shift going on. Fundraising experts, strategists, consultants all know it. The fundraising paradigm shift is written about in books and blogs, and discussed at conferences. The challenge is that we are in the middle of a journey with a fuzzy destination. But isn’t that what all paradigm shifts are – a journey? We can describe parts of it, but we can’t tell you about the whole journey with certainty until it has been completed. What do we know about it? The fundraising paradigm shift is happening […]

It’s time to rethink nonprofit data

It’s time to rethink nonprofit data

Data. It’s the four-letter word that seems to be on the lips of just about every executive in the nation. It is being called the ‘new oil’ of the 21st century, the fuel that will power our interconnected, information economy. Make no mistake – data is as important to nonprofit organizations as their for-profit cousins. The Chronicle of Philanthropy said as much in a recently published article about how nonprofits are beginning to user their data more effectively. Unfortunately, many if not most of today’s nonprofit organizations focus a disproportionate […]

More or better: Which donor strategy is preferred?

More or better: Which donor strategy is preferred?

Looking at the charity sector at the macro level, statistics are reassuring.  Giving has been recovering since the financial crisis of 2008. This past summer, sources reported that year-over-year growth in charitable giving for 2012 continued at a steady pace of 3.5%.  The largest sectors receiving donations continue to be religious institutions (32%), education (13%) and social services (12%).  Online giving remains a relatively small part of the total at $316B, yet it also continues to outpace all giving (up anywhere from 11% to 17%, depending on the source and […]
